How to deal with a teacher with very bad handwriting?

I currently have a english teacher with very, very bad handwriting...so bad that I can't read most of it, and I'm sure that most of my cl mates are same as me. He is also very mean; he failed the whole grade 12 for some reason that i don't know. He is also very messy; he writes over words (overlapping words) and his words are everywhere on the blackboard...one word here, one word there. I'm too afraid to ask him to write neater in cl, but I'm also too afraid to ask him to write clearer after school, thinking that he'll take it personally and fail me for no reason, since he did it to the whole grade 12 cl, he can do it to me too. I don't know what to do.
