I still have the bottom retainer?

I got my braces off about 6 years ago. They put the metal ber thing on my lower teeth and... It's still there. Was this supposed to be removed? Can I have it taken out? I really really hate the drill, I got my tongue caught in it when they were taking off the thing to fix my over-bite, but I really hate my bar. =/
